STEP NI Migrant Workers’ Support Project

S.T.E.P. Migrant Workers’ Support Project has been operating since 2001 when employees and other individuals volunteered advice and guidance for Migrant Workers coming to the Dungannon area.

The following areas are covered by the Migrant Workers’ Support Project at S.T.E.P.

Migrant Support Centre
Individual support to migrant workers is carried out in Migrant Support Centres (one located in Dungannon and a second one located in Portadown). The service is usually accessed by individuals with little or no knowledge of English, who need information and help to access basic services such as Health, Social Security, Home Office, Education services, etc.

Employment Rights
S.T.E.P. is involved in the campaign for equal employment rights for all through:

  • Highlighting exploitation and discrimination
  • Advising on work, social and economic issues
  • Signposting to other assistance
  • Developing relationships with other organisations
  • Recruiting and representing agency members
  • Negotiating union recognition with agencies.

Immigration Advice
The organisation has recently achieved Level 3 status from the O.I.S.C. (Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner), for the provision of this Immigration Advice, extending their existing provision of service to Migrant Workers in training, advocacy, employment rights clinics, community development and so on.

Community Development
The Community Development team at S.T.E.P. is involved with a number of projects involving the Migrant Worker community.

Migrant Worker Support Network
S.T.E.P. launched the Migrant Worker Support Network (MWSN) in May 2006. The network was established to allow the sharing of information and resources across all organisations working on Migrant Worker issues.
